9th Grade Academics: Shakespeare Response

Write an initial response and then a response that discusses with another classmate their perspective. Let's get a conversation going.

Based on Romeo and Juliet, does love in high school unfold in a similar way? Why or why not? Is their love a true love; why or why not? Give examples from the text and from real life to back up your ideas.

I would have to say no because the lust that those two had for each other was not even as close to what may happen at school. I mean you dont see people running after each other all day and trying to spend as much time with each other as they can. The people that are most like the adults would be the teachers and they would just tell people to break it up and get to class nothing like what had gone on in the book, also i think that most of parents care about there kids but they problably dont know what happens at school because they wont tell them because they know that there parents will not approve and most likely not like what they do at school. I think most people have more than one life because some people try to be what other people want them to be but they change when they are with someone else. So my answer is right in the middle but most likely leaning towards no there is not love and lust like what had been going on in the book or movie

No high school love does not unfold the same way. It does dont happen the same because of the drama in high school. No Romeo and Juliets love is not true. its not true because in the beginning they fell in love only by each others looks. they barely knew anything about each other.

I think love in high school and love in romeo and juliet are similar. I think so because romeo and juliet are both near high school age. Also their life isn't that different from ours. They show love just with different actions and words. I think their love is a true love because they take it very serious. Also when they get separated they treat it like dying. In the end they both killed themselves just because of love.

i think in high school some relationships do click like romeo and juliet did some of the things i dont understand is when you date sombody and they are in love in the first month of going out ive seen people that it take 6 months or almosta year and then some thats what i dont understand about some people in there relationships

i dont think high school love turns out this way like how romeo and juliet turned out. im pretty sure people dont get married at 15 anymore. i dont think their partner is worth dying for. i think their love is true because they killed themselves when they found out the other was dead. they stayed pure to each other while they were seperated. but then again, juliet didnt tell her parents about romeo when they said she was being wed to paris. i tink a true couple would do that.

matt, i totally agree with you. its like i stole exactly what you wrote, which i totally didnt. you have a very smart way of thinking. i like what you said about the parents part. do you think someone in high school wold get married at 15, because i dont? do you think taht they would tell their parents if they were being forced to get amrried but thet already were? romeo and juleit was a very contriversial play in my thoughts, how about you?

You do have a good point they did know nothing of each other when they had first met. I should have thought of that good thinking ken. I thought the same way to there is no way that they are close. I mean there is a difference between love and lust and they had both so dont really think you see anyone in school like that.

I don't think love in high school can relate to Romeo and Juliet's love in any way. Teenagers that are in relaationships always have problems, and drama. Romeo and Juliet didn't have anything against each other that would make them mad at each other. Kids get mad over the dumbest things these days, and thats why relationships end. And when the relationship is over, most couples don't like each other, or they don't stay in touch. Romeo and Juliet didn't have any fights with each other and they loved each other a lot. Their love is true love, but at the same time it is really dramatic. If someone is willing to kill them self over one person, than that is dedication. I know for a fact that teenagers would not kill them self over one guy/girl. They would probably be sad for a couple of weeks, and then move on.

I agree with you. Romeo and Juliet barley knew each other, and they believed in 'love at first sight' Most teenagers don't believe in that today. I don't think you can really fall in love with someone unless you really get to know them; with Romeo and Juliet did not do.

I can see why you say that it's not true love. I also agree with your statement saying they fell in love at first just because of their looks. I think that kind of makes it fake love in the end. I also think its true love because in the end they are so emotional about being apart and such. Overall i think I've changed my mind to their love being in between true and fake.

I think love in high school does not unfold the same way. I think this because people talk to people and get to know eachother before they start to go out. With Romeo and Juliet they liked eachother the minute they saw eachother. They do not know anything about eachother. At some points their love is true love and then other times their love is not a true love. When they are on the balcony scene it seems that their love is true love then. Also when they kill their selfs because the one died that also seemed like true love. It seemed like true love because they really wanted to be together. I think their love is true love more.

I would have to say no. In high school most people only date each other for popularity and looks. There are probably no true feelings involved in them. It is also like the story. They only love each other for there looks. There are no true love thoughts.

Moaad I would have to disagree with you. First of all them may be the same age but they don’t have to go to school like us. School teaches us what is right from wrong witch they do not know. Plus in the beginning of the story Juliet wasn’t even sure she wanted to be with Romeo. She was taken in by his looks not her felling toward him.

i agree with you one reason because normally they get to know each other before they fall in love. i also think that some of what happened in the book could happen in high school but it doesnt because of the adults. they only fell in love at first by each others looks. but i do disagree with one thing some teens do try to spend as much time as they can together

I do not think love in high school happens the same way. I think its more based on how good of friends they are. I do not think Romeos and Juliet’s love is true its more like lust. They seem to eager to get married and don’t care about what there parents think. When most marriages are based off of someone’s parents approval.

I think matt’s point is very close and true to how it actually happens. I also like his point how teachers would most likely just break it up. Plus its much, much harder and more expensive to be married in our present time. So obviously they probably wouldn’t have true love or lust for one another. The book seems very far fetched on how it would have really happened.

Hey I agree with you that love does not unfold the same way in high school. We have different reasons but your reason was good. Your are right that it's because of all the drama. Also I agree that they barely knew each other. They shouldn't have gone out because they didn't know a lot about each other.

I think love in highschool is like love in romeo and juliet in a few ways but its mostly different. Because nowadays if someone has love for someone else that strong they will hardly ever let someone get in the way of stopping it. I persoanlly think their love is not a true love, I don't think its love at all. I think its romeo lusting over juliet over more then anything else. Because they,"Fell in love" with eachother over just their looks which in my eyes is not love at all.

Me and you share a few of the same ideas. But we also disagree on some, such as if it is real love or not. I personally think it is not true love while on the other hand do think it is. And you think their "Love" Is like highschool love today while i persoanly think it is not.

I do think that "love" could possibly unfold like this in High School. People have married that feel in "love" in High School.I do not think that Romeo and Juliet's love was "real". After all they had just met and barely spoken. In the play they fall min love when they first see each other at the party and i don't believe people can fall in love with out saying one word to each other.

I feel the same way! Looks is not what love is about at all! And obviously their "love" was not real. Romeo abuses the word love and does not know what it truely means.
